Ethiopian Opposition Politicians Meet Virtually

Ethiopian opposition politicians on Saturday held an unprecedented virtual discussion. The discussion was aimed at forming a broad political alliance against the ruling Prosperity Party. Next General Election is expected to be held in mid 2026 in Ethiopia.

Saturday’s virtual program was attended by Jawar Mohammed Oromo Federal Congress Deputy Chairman (from Oromia region), Gedu Andargachew former Ethiopian Foreign Minister (from Amhara region), Sebhat Nega founding member of Tigray People’s Liberation Front (from Tigray region), Ismail Qodax leader of Somali Democratic Council (from Somali region), Lidetu Ayalew former opposition leader of Ethiopia, Amanuel Mogiso Leader of Wolaita National Movement (from Wolaita), Zemene Kassie Amhara Fano commander (from Amhara region), Yusuf Yasin Afar Scholar and other politicians, scholars, journalists etc.

The 3-hour long discussion was broadcast on several YouTube channels. Interestingly, the Ethiopian government blocked YouTube in Ethiopia during the virtual meeting. All the participants lashed out at the ruling Prosperity Party led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

The Prosperity Party leaders today slammed the participants of the virtual meeting. Mustafa Omar, a senior PP leader who is the President of Somali region, reacted to the virtual program. He said that failed politicians, armed extremists and haters launched a one-day media campaign.

Almost all the participants of the virtual meeting are based abroad. They fled Ethiopia recently accusing the government of denying political space to them. It seems that a broad opposition anti ruling party alliance of different groups is in the making in Ethiopia.
