The blockade of Tigray region of Ethiopia has been partially lifted. It was lifted after talks between Tigray President & Ethiopian Federal Police Chief.
For several days, the movement of trucks was being restricted from the Amhara and Afar regions towards Tigray. Federal Police had set up checkpoints in the two regional states bordering Tigray. Trucks carrying fruits, vegetables, fuel etc have been stranded for days.
Tigray Regional Trade Bureau wrote two letters to the Ethiopian Federal Government this week demanding clarification but the issue could not be solved.
On Friday, Tigray President Tadesse Werede met with Demelash Gebremichael, Ethiopian Federal Police Chief. The two agreed to form a joint investigative committee to look into the matter. Reportedly after the meeting, the trucks stranded on checkpoints for days were allowed to proceed towards Tigray.
It is being said that the Ethiopian Federal Government is not happy with the growing intimacy between Tigray government and Eritrea. Reports came in last week that cross border Eritrea Tigray trade had begun without approval of the federal government.
It seems that in response to reports of Tigray Eritrea trade, Ethiopian federal government imposed a blockade of Tigray. Federal government wants deployment of federal forces to Tigray Eritrea border, reportedly. TPLF and Tigray military are reluctant to allow large scale deployments of ENDF and Ethiopian Federal Police to the border.
