Fano commander Colonel Tadesse Eshete has been killed in Gondar reportedly. The incident happened on Saturday March 1.
Tadesse Eshete served as a Colonel in the Ethiopian National Defense Force. He served in peacekeeping missions in Somalia, Somaliland, Sudan etc. Last year he joined Fano. Fano militias have been fighting the Ethiopian security forces in Amhara since mid 2023.
Fano commander Tadesse Eshete joined Amhara Fano People’s Organization (AFPO) in Gondar. AFPO was founded by politician-turned-Fano Eskinder Nega. AFPO has been trying to expand its presence in different parts of the Amhara region. However AFPO is opposed by several main Fano groups.
Colonel Tadesse Eshete was killed in Gayint South Gondar in confrontation between Ethiopian security forces and Fano fighters. In March 2024, another senior Fano commander was killed. Wubante Abate was killed in South Gondar.
Amhara Fano People’s Organization (AFPO) has confirmed the news of Fano commander’s death. AFPO, in its statement, paid tribute to the services of the deceased commander.
