Several protesters were injured and killed on Monday in the Gondar city of Amhara region. The protests erupted after the tragic murder of a 3-year old girl.
On Thursday, 3 year old baby girl Nolavit was kidnapped in Gondar city. Ransom was demanded by unknown kidnappers. According to the family, 300,000 birr ransom was paid. The kidnappers dumped the girl’s body at the entrance of her house. The baby girl was taken to a nearby hospital but she was pronounced dead.
On Monday, Nolavit’s family and hundreds of other residents staged a protest with the baby girl’s dead body. Gondar police talked to the protesters but the protesters could not be dispersed.
Several protesters were injured and killed after police opened fire at the protesters. Police used live rounds and fired direct shots at the protesters.
Kidnapping for ransom is a serious issue in Gondar city. Dozens of kidnapping incidents were reported this year. The kidnappers storm houses in broad day light and kidnap whoever they can lay their hands on.
