Ethiopian Media Authority Suspends Tigray TV Indefinitely
Ethiopian Media Authority (EMA) today suspended Tigray TV indefinitely. Tigray TV is owned by Tigray regional state of Ethiopia. Tigray regional state and Ethiopian federal government have been involved in persistent tensions which could trigger another war between them.
According to a statement issued by EMA today, Tigray TV aired content which endangered national and public security, national interest, and it incited conflict and promoted extremism. The media authority told other news outlets to ensure that Tigray TV’s content is not redistributed in any form on their platforms, otherwise they will also face disciplinary action.
Tigray TV is owned by Tigray regional state of Ethiopia. Regional states in Ethiopia own satellite television channels. Ethiopian federal government also owns several satellite television channels. For the last one year or so, Tigray TV and Ethiopian federal government owned satellite channels have been airing inflammatory content against each other. Tigray regional forces and Ethiopian federal forces fought a two year long deadly war which ended in November 2022 through Pretoria Deal.
Tensions have been escalating between Tigray regional leaders and Ethiopian federal government leaders since the start of this year. Federal government is conducting drone strikes on military sites in Tigray, while TPLF, Tigray’s ruling party, has formed an alliance with 6 other armed groups to overthrow the federal government. Yesterday the alliance was made public.
