Ethnic Violence Leaves Several Dead in Jimma Oromia

Several resident of Gera district in Jimma zone of Oromia have been killed in ethnic violence that erupted on weekend.

Ethnicity based attacks against Amhara residents of the Gera district began after an Oromo investor was killed last week. Zakir Aba Oli, the coffee investor, and his security guard were killed after an armed group stormed his house. The attackers were allegedly from the Amhara ethnic group.

Gera residents took to the streets against the killing of the investor. The street protests were followed by attacks on Amhara residents of the district. Several houses were torched and businesses were destroyed. Hundreds of Amhara people fled into Keffa zone which is situated in south west region of Ethiopia.

Federal forces have been deployed in in the area. Situation is tense but under control. Unknown number of people lost their lives in violent attacks. Oromia regional government has not issued any official statement so far about the number of killed. Local sources claim that around 10 were killed and several hundreds were displaced.
