Dozens of security officials have been arrested in the Amhara region of Ethiopia in a massive crackdown. The crackdown, launched last week, is aimed at uncovering and stopping the support Amhara Fano militias receive from the regional government officials.
Since last year, the Ethiopian military has been conducting an operation against Fano militias across the Amhara region of Ethiopia. Despite several major offensives launched in the last 12 months, Fano groups could not be weakened. In an attempt to cut off the link between Fano and its sources in government, the security forces have launched a major operation to arrest those government and security officials who are in contact with Fano, leaking information to Fano and providing support to Fano groups.
According to sources, Muluneh Alemu, the head of regional militia office weapons department has been detained. Diresh Sahilu, the former mayor of Bahir, who is currently the head of the Amhara region agriculture bureau and the Bahir Dar command post has also been arrested. Yesterday, ENDF and Riot Dispersal forces tried to capture Commissioner Mulu Hunegnaw. He is former Amhara special force commander. His house was raided but he managed to flee reportedly.
On weekend, in Bahir Dar city, federal security forces arrested Wubetu, the Commissioner, Getinet, the Bahirdar city security chief, Gebeyaw, the Bahirdar city militia chief, Commander Waleleng Mimerew, the Bahirdar police commander, Commander Zerihun Asrade, the Bahirdar police public security chief and Adisu Amogne, the head of the second station defense unit.
In Debark and other areas of Gondar too, several security and government officials have been arrested in the last 72 hours.
The regional and federal governments issued no statements in this regard so far.
