Tigray President Appoints Alem Gebrewahid as Deputy President

Alem Gebrewahid

Lt. Gen. Tadesse Worede, President of the Tigray Interim Administration, has officially appointed Alem Gebrewahid as Vice President and Advisor to the President in charge of Zonal, Urban, and Leadership Affairs.

Alem Gebrewahid, a senior figure within the TPLF (Tigray People’s Liberation Front), previously held influential roles within the party’s executive leadership and its secretariat office. While recent months saw growing speculation over his status following internal restructuring within the party, today’s appointment marks a significant return to political visibility under the interim administration.

Alem had been notably absent from frontline roles after former Tigray Interim President Getachew Reda was removed from government authority. He was at the forefront of removing Getachew Reda. Observers had viewed Alem’s reduced visibility as a sign of shifting alliances within the TPLF leadership.

However, today’s announcement signals a new chapter. President Tadesse’s decision to bring Alem into a key advisory and coordination role is seen as a strategic move to leverage his political experience during a critical period of institutional rebuilding in Tigray.

Sources indicate that while some senior TPLF leaders had reportedly opposed Alem’s reappointment, the final decision came directly from the President.
