The Prime Minister of Ethiopia, on Saturday, claimed that Ethiopia has successfully built quality military and civilian drones.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed released a video message from SkyWin Aeronautics Industry, a facility built to manufacture UAVs. United Arab Emirates reportedly played a key role in the establishment of this facility.
“It was unimaginable to think about producing drones locally a few years ago. The ability to design and manufacture drones with many different types of skills by our own professionals is a big waste of history,” he said.
He implied in his talk that the SkyWin drones manufactured in Ethiopia are better than the UAV’s imported by Ethiopia in recent years. In the last 4 years, Ethiopia imported 5 quality combat military drones: Turkish Akinci, Turkish TB2, Emirati Reach-S, Iranian Mohajir-6 and Chinese Wing Long.
The Prime Minister claimed that Skywin can fly at higher altitudes and are equipped with anti jamming systems. These locally manufactured drones have extra communication system and are AI guided.
Ethiopian drones have not been tested in any battlefield yet. Ethiopian government has been widely using the five types of imported drones in internal conflicts in Tigray, Amhara and Oromia regions.
