Ethiopian Migrants Die

Over 180 Ethiopian migrants have died while trying to illegally enter Yemen. UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM) today shared details of tragic the incident.

According to IOM, two boats carrying mostly Ethiopian migrants sank off the coast of Yemen on Thursday. Two crew members were rescued, but 181 migrants and five Yemeni crew remain missing. At least 57 of them are women.

Two other boats capsized Djibouti’s coast about the same time. Two dead bodies were recovered, and all others on board were rescued.

Thousands of migrants, mainly from Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia try to illegally enter Yemen every year. They plan to enter Saudi Arabia from Yemen. Around 400 lost their lives in 2024 while trying to reach Yemen from Ethiopia.
