Eritrean navy opened fire at a Yemeni fishing boat, killing at least 3 fishermen. The incident opened this week, according to Yemeni news sources.
Yemen and Eritrea have been involved in a dispute in the Red Sea, over the Hanish Islands. The islands are located near the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait. According to a decision by the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the archipelago belongs to Yemen and Eritrea will retain sovereignty over some smaller islands and fishing rights.
Eritrean authorities have long been accusing Yemeni fishermen of violating Eritrean territorial integrity by fishing in Eritrean waters. The Yemeni fishermen are frequently detained by Eritrean navy. They are mostly released after months of detention.
No official statement has been issued by the Eritrean authorities about this week’s incident involving death of 3 Yemeni fishermen allegedly by Eritrean navy.
