Eritrea has withdrawn from CHAN soccer match against Ethiopia. African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers are being played in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
Eritrean football team was due to face Ethiopia in its first soccer appearance in recent years. The match was due to be played in Juba South Sudan. But the Eritrean players did not turn up for the match. According to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Eritrea has withdrawn from the African Nations Championship.
Eritrea is the second country to have withdrawn from CHAN, a biennial African association football tournament organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) since 2009. Somalia has also withdrawn from the competition. Somalia was due to face Burundi in its first match. Reportedly, due to lack of funds, the Football Federation of Somalia withdrew from the competition.
It is not clear why actually Eritrea withdrew from the competition. Some experts say that Eritrea did not send its football team for this competition for fear of attempts by players to seek asylum abroad if they manage to leave Eritrea. Others are of the view that Eritrean football federation lacks required funds. No official statement has been issued by the Eritrean government so far.
