Ethiopian Electric Power

Ethiopian Electric Power EEP has stated that daily electricity supply from Ethiopia to Sudan has dropped. Sudan, Djibouti and Kenya buy electricity from Ethiopia. In March this year, Ethiopia signed a power supply agreement with Tanzania too.

The supply of power from Ethiopia to Sudan has dropped from 200 megawatts to 50 megawatts, says EEP. The drop is being attributed to the ongoing civil war in Sudan and nonpayment of dues by Sudan authorities.

Civil war in Sudan broke out last year. Sudanese military led by General Abdul Fattah Al Burhan and Rapid Support Forces led by Hamdan Dagalo are involved in fierce fighting in central, western and southern parts of the country.

“They are not paying for the electricity they use,” said an Ethiopian Electric Power official on condition of anonymity.

According to the contract signed between Ethiopia and Sudan, it is possible for Ethiopia to terminate the power supply if Sudan does not pay for the electricity it is using. But so far, Ethiopia has not fully suspended the supply of electricity to its neighbor.

Ethiopia has energy connections with Sudan, Djibouti and Kenya. It supplies up to two terawatt hours of energy per day to the three countries. Much of the electricity used by Djibouti comes from Ethiopia, and 10 percent of the electricity used by Kenya comes from Ethiopia.
