Ethiopian Airforce Conducts 20 Drone Strikes in Tigray in a Day
Ethiopian air force today conducted over 20 drone strikes in Tigray. The air force mainly targeted southern Tigray zone.
The drone strikes began at 09:30 am local time. Several schools and other buildings were hit in and around Alamata city, which is a major city in Tigray’s southern zone. Reportedly, the strikes targeted Zikre Meles secondary school, Eyasu Berhe school, Negus Cherkole school, Technical and Vocational Training center, Abebe Flour factory and other buildings in and around Alamata city.
According to Moges Shiferaw, Alamata city mayor, 14 civilians were killed in today’s drone strikes. No statement has been issued by the Ethiopian military about today’s drone strikes so far.
Ethiopian federal forces and Tigray regional forces fought a two year long deadly war which ended in November 2022. But warring parties could not find lasting solutions to long standing political issues.
Ethiopian government officials accuse Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), Tigray’s ruling party, of using schools for military activities. Schools are closed in the Tigray region for summer vacations. Yesterday Tigray Education Bureau announced that schools were going to reopen after summer vacations.
Ethiopian air force has targeted more than 10 schools in Tigray since the start of drone strikes on Tigray around two months ago. Injured and dead from today’s drone strikes were shifted to Alamata hospital and other nearby healthcare institutions.
On Sunday, TPLF & 6 other opposition groups formed Alliance for Survival, vowing to topple Ethiopian Prime Minister’s government militarily. Ethiopian government accelerated drone strikes after the formation of the opposition alliance.
