Amhara region conflict

A 15-member committee has been formed to facilitate dialogue in the Amhara region of Ethiopia. Since last year, an armed conflict has been ongoing in the region between Fano militias and security forces.

The committee was constituted after a 2-day peace conference held this week in Bahir Dar, the Amhara regional capital. The conference was attended by Agegnehu Teshager the Speaker of the Ethiopian House of Federation, Arega Kebede Amhara Regional President, Senior Ethiopian National Defense Force officers, Religious Leaders and other elders.

The participants in their speeches raised alarm about the worsening security and humanitarian situation in the Amhara region. The committee formed consists of community elders.

Ethiopian federal and Amhara regional government are backing this committee. So far Fano militias have not issued any statement in response to the formation of this committee.

The committee has been tasked with facilitating dialogue between the parties to conflict in the Amhara region. It is expected to talk to Fano militias in order to convince them to be part of dialogue to end the armed conflict in Amhara through negotiations. Fano groups have been rejecting the proposal of talks with incumbent government of the Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed. One of their pre conditions for dialogue is removal of the current Ethiopian government.
