Tigray forces are gradually expanding their presence in Southern Tigray, a disputed territory between the Tigray and Amhara regions. Tigray has managed to control large parts of the Southern Zone. Yesterday they entered the last remaining town which had not presence of Tigray militias.
Southern Zone was part of Tigray before the start of war in November 2020. One last remaining town where there was no presence of Tigray militia members is Waja. Otherwise in all other main towns and cities of the Southern Zone Tigray Fighters have managed to enter.
Reportedly yesterday Tigray militias entered Waja town. A few days ago, a protest was held by the people of Waja and Timuga. They held the demonstration against likely entry of Tigray Fighters.
Yesterday’s entry of Tigray Fighters into Waja was facilitated by Ethiopian National Defense Force and federal police units. Reportedly Tigray militias did not enter Waja alone rather federal forces and Tigray fighters jointly entered the town.
According to residents of the area, Tigray fighters crossed Waja and they were seen in Walka kebele in Kobo. It seems that Tigray forces want too set up defense line somewhere on Kobo Waja border. No checkpoints established but reportedly Tigray militia members are planning to establish checkpoints there.
