An ongoing armed conflict in the Amhara region of Ethiopia is taking a heavy toll on the schooling activities. Around 60% of the school going children are unable to continue educational activities. It was revealed by Arega Kebede, Amhara regional president.
Since mid 2023, Amhara region has been embroiled in a deadly armed conflict between security forces and Fano militias. The militias claim that fundamental rights of Amhara ethnic group people are being violated. They call their struggle war for survival.
President Arega Kebede, this week, submitted a report to the regional council. The report states that 59.8% of children are out of schools in the region. Dozens of schools have been damaged or being used by military or Fano fighters.
Fano fighters oppose resumption of educational activities in the region. They have been reportedly involved in hand grenade attacks on schools in Bahir Dar, Amhara regional capital.
No end seems to be in sight to the deadly armed conflict. No formal talks have been held between the government and Fano fighters so far.
