Tigray Interim President Getachew Reda has responded to a statement issued earlier today by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front Debretsion wing. He announced to take legal action on the TPLF Debretsion Gebremichael group. Tigray Interim Regional Administration (TIRA) led by the President Getachew Reda has issued a counter statement.
Today, TPLF Debretsion group announced that Tigray President Getachew Reda and Tigray interim government cabinet members have been relieved off their duties and they cannot lead Tigray on any forum. The TPLF announced to appoint new interim president after consultation with the federal government and relevant authorities. It appointed 7 TPLF leaders to the Tigray interim cabinet and appointed new governors to six zones.
Tigray interim regional administration (TIRA), in its counter statement, accused the Debretsiong wing by saying, “Following the split in the TPLF leadership, one group held an illegal congress. After this illegal congress, this force has been violating law and order in Tigray. This force is engaged in disrupting the unity of the people of Tigray. It is also launching a relentless campaign of slander and accusations against the leadership of the Tigray Interim Administration and the Tigray Army. Sometimes this group says “the army is with us” and other times it says “we have reached an agreement with the federal government”.
Getachew Reda led TIRA termed today’s statement by TPLF Debretsion as a “public coup”, vowing to take action. “The Tigray Provisional Administration cannot tolerate this cowardice. The Interim Administration of Tigray will start taking legal action against the leadership of this force of destruction. We would like to take this opportunity to inform the entire people that this group and its leadership are solely responsible for any damage caused in this process,” it said.
It seems that Getachew Reda has refused to be removed by the TPLF Debretsion wing. While he has shown his intentions to fight back, his survival hinges on support from Tigray security forces or federal government of Ethiopia. Tigray security forces, in their statements, claim to be neutral in this political conflict between two TPLF factions, but reportedly majority of Tigray’s military commanders is supportive of Debretsion Gebremichael group.
