A senior Italian official delegation led by Minister Adolfo Urso has held key meeting with senior Eritrean officials including Isaias Afwerki, the Eritrean President. The delegation arrived in Asmara on Monday for a 3-day visit.
Italy is expected to invest in healthcare, infrastructure, port logistics, air transport, renewable energy, mining, textiles, agriculture and agri-food – within the framework of the Mattei Plan for Africa , promoted by the Italian government with the aim of relaunching Italy’s action on the African continent from a “non-predatory” but “equal” partnership perspective. Adolfi Urso met the Eritrean president Isaiah Afwerki and some government ministers. The meeting was also attended by the Eritrean Foreign Minister, Osman Saleh Mohammed, the Minister of Trade and Industry, Nesredin Bekit, the Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Woldemichael Abraha, the Minister of Health, Saleh Meky, and the Commissioner for Culture and Sport, Zemede Tecle Woldatetios.
In January, Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki attended Italy Africa summit. He stayed in Italy for around 10 days. Back then Italian officials said that Italy was hoping to be the first European country to sign a co operation agreement with Eritrea. Eritrea has not been on good terms with US and Western countries. It is still under sanctions, renewed by EU last month.
Italy wants to stem the flow of migrants from Africa to its soil. It has decided to engage with all the African countries so that mutually agreed solution could be found.
