Launching ceremony of Ethiopian politician Jawar Mohammed’s book named HIN GAABBU/አልፀፀትም has been postponed. Through a social media post, Jawar confirmed the postponement.
“We regret to inform you that today’s scheduled book launch at Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi has been postponed due to concerns raised by the venue’s management regarding the “size and safety” of the expected attendees at the last minute. We will announce a new date as soon as an alternative venue is secured. Thank you for your understanding,” Jawar said.
Jawar Mohammed is deputy chairman of Oromo Federalist Congress, one of Ethiopia’s main opposition political parties. He has been largely based in Kenya since his release from prison in January 2022. In his recent social media posts and interviews, he slammed the Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for denying peaceful political activities to opposition political parties.
Next general election is expected to be held at the start of 2026 in Ethiopia. Jawar Mohammed and other opposition politicians want to ensure that the next election is transparent. Opposition parties boycotted 2021 general election which provided Abiy Ahmed with an opportunity to get himself elected for a 5 year term.
Fingers are being pointed towards the Ethiopian government which might have influenced Kenyan government to stop Jawar from publishing his book in Kenya.
