Fighting between Somaliland & SSC Khatumo Displaces Thousands

Intense fighting between Somaliland forces and SSC Khatumo fighters in Erigavo has caused serious damage on both sides. SSC Khatumo split with the Somaliland administration at the start of last year. Since then it has been trying to consolidate administrative control of areas under its control in Sol, Sanag and Cayn zones. Somaliland government, on the other hand, wants to retake control of SSC Khatumo held areas.

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), 43,000 including women and children have been displaced due to the fighting.

The fighting between the two sides erupted on December 14 in southern Erigavo and surrounding areas. It went on for 2 days. After a 72 hour-calm, fighting resumes on Friday. Today, clashes happened between the two sides in Dacawalay, Duud-bedale and other places. Injured were reportedly shifted to Dhagaxbour and Hargeisa.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in its report today said that displaced families are in need of immediate humanitarian assistance, including shelter, clean water, food and healthcare.

No official statements have been issued by Somaliland government and SSC Khatumo so far. According to local sources, both sides suffered casualties and dozens could be dead.
