Jubaland regional government today gave 15-day deadline to federal forces to leave the region. Jubaland Federal Member State (FMS) of Somalia and the Federal Government of Somalia are in dispute.
On Monday, federal forces arrived in Ras Kambooni Jubaland by air. Hundreds of Turkey-trained Gorgor troops were seen landing in Ras Kambooni, a town around 300 km away from Kismayo, Jubaland regional capital. The deployment of federal forces in Jubaland came after indirect election was held in Jubaland on Monday. Ahmed Madobe, the president, secured the 3rd consecutive term in the election opposed and rejected by the federal government.
Today Jubaland government gave 15-day ultimatum to federal forces and police in Ras Kambooni to leave. The FMS warned that after the expiry of the deadline, federal government will be responsible for consequences.
In a related move, on Tuesday, a court in Banadir issued arrest warrants of Jubaland President. In retaliation, Jubaland regional court issued arrest warrants of Hassan Sheikh, the President of Somalia. The withdrawal of federal forces from Ras Kamboni seems unlikely as Somali National Army (SNA) reinforcement landed in Ras Kamboni yesterday.
On Thursday, the Prime Minister of Somalia visited Kenya to seek Kenyan support for the resolution of conflict in Jubaland. Kenya shares border with Jubaland and Kenyan leaders hold political clout in Jubaland.
