Mahad Mohamed Salad Reappointed as Head of Somalia’s Intelligence Agency

Somalia’s cabinet has reappointed Mahad Mohamed Salad as head of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), replacing Abdullahi Sanbaloolshe, who took over the post on April 9, 2024.

Hamza Abdi Bare, the Prime Minister of Somalia, on Saturday, chaired an emergency meeting of the Council of Ministers. According to state media, the reappointment came after a formal recommendation from the Ministry of Internal Security, which was approved by the Council of Ministers.

Mahad previously held the position but was dismissed in April last year, when he was replaced by Abdullahi Mohamed Ali “Sanbaloolshe” — whom he now replaces.

Mahad Mohamed Salad has held several key roles in Somali politics, including serving as a government minister and a member of parliament. His return to lead the country’s spy agency comes at a time when Somalia faces heightened security challenges, including the ongoing fight against Al-Shabaab and the need for broader reforms within the security sector.
