Somalia’s PM today visited Kenya to seek Kenyan support in order to resolve the conflict between Jubaland region and Federal Government of Somalia.
On Monday, Jubaland held indirect election and Ahmed Mohamed Islam got himself elected as President for the 3rd term. Federal government rejected the election as illegal and a court in Bandair issued arrest warrants of Ahmed Madobe, the Jubaland president. Jubaland responded by issuing arrest warrant of Hassan Sheikh, the President of Somalia.
Kenya has long been having political and security influence in Jubaland regional states of Somalia, which shares border with Kenya. The Prime Minister of Somalia visited Kenya reportedly to seek the support of Kenyan leadership. It is not clear if Somalia wants Kenyan political support to engage Jubaland President or military support to press ahead with federal military operation against Jubaland government. Jubaland regional forces and Federal forces are confronting each other in Ras Kambooni. Dozens of Jubaland regional force members surrendered to federal forces yesterday.
Meanwhile the government of Jubaland, after a cabinet meeting today, said that it had cut ties with the Federal Government of Somalia. It announced that it had “completely and officially cut off all business and any relationship with the Federal Government of Somalia”.
In August this year, the government of Puntland announced that it had completely severed relations with the central government of Somalia.
