Dozens of Ethiopian doctors, on strike, have been arrested in the ongoing crackdown by the government on the Ethiopian health professionals. Today is day 3 of the full strike announced by health professionals in Ethiopia. They have gone on strike to force the government to consider their 12 demands about increase in salaries and other benefits.
Four health professionals working in Debretabor General Specialized Hospital were arrested from their homes today. Dr. Sewmehon and Dr. Birtukan are among the arrested. Total number of health professionals remains unknown. On Monday, 18 health professionals including Yonathan Getachew, the chairman of Ethiopian Health Professionals Association, were released from prison.
Dereje Duguma, the State Minister of Health. last night warned health professionals and medical students. He said that licenses of those health professionals, who are on strike, are being revoked. He added that those medical students who are part of the strike will be expelled from medical colleges.
Meanwhile health services remain partially suspended in dozens of major hospitals across Ethiopia. Following hospitals and institutions are currently on full/partial strike:
