Jubaland Election

Jubaland, federal member state of Somalia, on Thursday, officially announced its boycott of the Moqadishu administration’s proposal to delay regional elections in favor of “one person, one vote” election planned for 2025.  In a statement, Jubaland declared its intention to organize its own elections as soon as possible.

On Thursday, the National Consultative Council meeting concluded under the chairmanship of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. The NCC meeting was boycotted by Jubaland and Puntland. Both the federal member states support indirect election while Federal government wants direct election (one person one vote) to be held. The key outcomes of the joint Communique included, among others:

1. The Council emphasized the importance of finalizing the establishment of the Independent National Electoral and Boundaries Commissions and submitting necessary legislative proposals to the Federal Parliament.

2. The NCC agreed to hold local Council elections in June 2025, and Parliament Representatives, Federal Member States Presidential Elections in September 2025

However yesterday, Jubaland rejected the decision made by the NCC. The NCC meeting was attended by Southwest, Hirshabelle, Galmudug, Banadhir region heads. It was chaired by the President Hassan Sheikh.
