A girl named Mahlet Teklai, who has been missing for the last 3 months, has been found dead in Tigray. She was kidnapped in March this year.
Mahlet, a student, was kidnapped in Adwa city of Tigray. She was kidnapped while she was on her way to school. Police has been investigating the disappearance of the girl. Mahlet’s father, Teklai Girmay, said that 3 million birr had been demanded as ransom by her daughter’s abductors.
Tsegai Asefa, Tigray Central Zone Police Head of Criminal Investigation, today announced that the culprits who kidnapped Mahlet had been arrested. During investigation, the culprits admitted that they had killed the girl. They took the police to the police where her dead body had been dumped.
Police has recovered Mahlet Tekhlai’s dead body reportedly. The dead body has been shifted to a hospital for medical examination. The burial ceremony will be held at Abune Aregawi church in Adwa city.
This is not the first incident involving violence against women in Tigray. Several other cases were also reported in the last 2 years. Another girl, Zewdu Haftu, was killed in Mekelle in August 2023. Zewdu Haftu’s murder is still untraced. Her friend and witness Semhal was imprisoned. She was released from prison a few week ago.
