Ethiopian Banks Report Record Profit in 2025/26

Ethiopian banks reported record profit in 2025/26 fiscal year. The banks this week shared details of the profit.
State owned Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) reported a record profit of over 80 billion birr for the 2025/26 fiscal year. CBE generated over 272 billion birr in revenue in the reported year. Its profit rose by 146.3 percent. Awash Bank, one of the largest private banks, reported 40.7 billion Birr in 2025/26 financial year. The bank recorded a pre-tax profit of 22.6 billion birr in the 2024/2025 financial year.
Ethiopian Gadaa bank more than doubled its profit in the financial year 2025/26. According to the bank’s annual performance report, it recorded pre-tax profit of 1.01 billion birr in 2025/26 fiscal year. Ahadu bank this week announced that it made a gross profit before tax and provisions of ETB 1.15 billion in the 2025/26 fiscal year. This is a 94.2% increase compared to its profit in 2024/25 fiscal year. Hijra bank also recorded rapid growth in 2025/26. It generated 3.55 billion birr in total income, which is 197% higher than the previous year. The bank almost tripled its income in just one year. Its gross profit increased to 1.9 billion birr, up 132% from last year. Another bank which also recorded profit and growth in 2025/26 is Berhan bank. Berhan bank recorded rapid growth, profitability, revenue and customer deposits during the last fiscal year. Its pre-tax profit reached 5.06 billion Birr showing 76.9% increase from the previous year. It recorded 12.37 billion Birr in total revenue, a 46.6% increase from the last year.
Wegagen Bank also recorded 21% growth in 2025/26 compared to the 2024/25 fiscal year. It registered 4 billion Birr pre tax profit in financial year 2025/2026. Its paid-up capital also grew by 44 percent compared to the last year same period, reaching Birr 10.1 billion. Another new established bank which showed record profit in 2025/26 in Shabelle Bank. Shabelle bank started its banking operations in 2022. In 2025/26 fiscal year, it earned 231 million birr pre tax profit, which is 122% more than the previous year. Bank tripled its profit in 2025/26. It registered over 2 billion birr gross profit in 2025/26 fiscal year. One of the Ethiopian private banks which in 2025/26 recorded one of the highest profits in its history is Zemen Bank. Zemen bank made a pre-audited gross profit of 10.2 billion birr. It earned 17.8 billion birr in total revenue during the year.
Another bank which recovered its losses this year is Tsedey bank. Tsedey bank recorded 4.3 billion pre tax profit in the fiscal year 2025/2026. In 2024/25 fiscal year, the bank reported a net loss of 2.13 billion birr.
Several other banks also registered record profit in the fiscal year ending last month. They have not released details for the whole year so far. The Development Bank of Ethiopia (DBE) last month reported that it had recorded gross profit of 08 billion birr in the first nine months of the fiscal year 2025/2026.
