Eritrea is interested in “military technology transfer” from Iran. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said that Iran is ready to share its capabilities and resources with the African country.

The President made the remarks meeting with Eritrean Foreign Minister Osman Saleh. Osman Saleh attended new Iranian President’s inauguration ceremony.

The Eritrean foreign minister, on Wednesday, condemned the assassination in Tehran of Hamas’ political chief Ismail Haniyeh. Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran on Tuesday night.

Osman Saleh further said Eritrea seeks expansion of relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran. Reportedly Eritrea is in talks with Iran about technology transfer. Eritrea has been interested in buying Iranian combat drones. Iran recently supplied its modern combat drones to the Sudanese government. The Sudanese military is using these drones against the Rapid Support Forces.

Eritrea is backing Sudanese military government led by General Abdul Fattah al Burhan. Growing Al Burhan-Iran closeness is paving the way for Eritrea to seek military technology transfer from Iran.

Eritrea and Iran have not been on good terms in the last one decade or so due to different positions on war in Yemen. Iran is backing Houthi fighters in Yemen. While Eritrea has been supportive of Arab coalition which intervened in Yemen to defeat Houthis.

The recent high level meetings between Eritrean and Iranian leaders indicate that Eritrea is ready to revitalize its relations with Iran.
