Azerbaijan has issued a diplomatic note to Eritrea about detention of its 3 ships by Eritrean navy. Eritrea has no embassy in Azerbaijan. The notes were issued to the Eritrean embassies in Ethiopia and the Russian Federation.
On November 7, 2024, the vessels CMS Pahlavan, CMS Igid, and CMS-3, operated by the Azerbaijani branch of Caspian Marine Services B.V. were intercepted by Eritrean navy when the ships were on their way from Baku to the UAE. The ships, flying Azerbaijan state flags, were detained by Eritrean forces after they entered Eritrean territorial waters due to bad weather.
The Azerbaijan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said in a statement that the entry of Azerbaijani ships into Eritrean waters was in accordance with international maritime law.
Meetings have been held between Azerbaijan diplomatic officials and Eritrean diplomats based in Turkey and the Russian Federation. The 3 ships and 8 crew members are still in custody in Eritrea.
