On Friday, US ambassador to Somalia visited Somaliland. Richard Riley was appointed as the US ambassador to Somalia in May this year. He met with Muse Bihi Abdi, Somaliland President, in Hargeisa.
The ambassador met with other senior political leaders, civil society leaders and members of the business community as well. He said US has a long-term commitment to supporting prosperity and democratic institutions in the region.
The two sides talked about regional cooperation and dialogue to resolve diplomatic and security issues. Richard Riley stressed the importance of holding election on time. Somaliland is due to hold delayed presidential election on November 13.
The US embassy in Somalia issued a written statement after this visit, which is being seen as ‘extraordinary’ by some analysts. The statement addresses Muse Bihi Abdi as “President of Somaliland.”
Officially US supports one Somalia. But self declared country Somaliland has been in talks with US and other countries for international recognition. US has been considering the establishment of a military base in Somaliland. “
