TPLF Tigray

Senior TPLF leaders have leveled serious allegations against each other at an ongoing party meeting. Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) seems to be experiencing the worst internal conflict in recent years.

Getachew Read, the interim President of Tigray and Alem Gebrewahid, Secretaty General of the party fiercely criticized each other during an going party meeting. The two are senior TPLF leaders. Central and seniors leaders of the party are meeting in Mekelle city of Tigray.

Alem Gebrewahid, reportedly, called Getachew Reda incompetent. To which Getachew Reda responded, accusing Alem of spying on the interim President and interim govt of Tigray. The interim President went on to say that Alem and his companions tried to disrupt talks which led to the signing of Pretoria deal which ended 2-year long deadly war in northern Ethiopia.

Getachew Reda labeled Alem-led TPLF group as blackmailers. He called for change in TPLF leadership, suggesting that youths should lead the party.

In March 2023 when the TPLF chose Getachew Reda as candidate to lead the government in Tigray, Alem vehemently opposed this decision. Since then, Alem and Getachew have been involved in several heated exchanges of words.

TPLF, a political party, was designated a terrorist entity in 2021 by the Ethiopian parliament. The terrorist designation was removed last year after the TPLF and Federal government signed Pretoria peace deal in South Africa. The party’s full political status is set to be restored soon. But the splits in the party indicate that some heads could roll in coming days.
