Welkait Tselemti

Tigray Fighters on Friday night crossed Tekeze river to move towards Welkait and Tselemti. Locals of the area confirmed large scale movement of Tigray fighters along Tekeze river.

Welkait Humera Tsegede and Tselemti and contested by the Tigray and Amhara regions of Ethiopia. Before the start of war in northern Ethiopia in November 2020, Western Zone (Humera Welkait Tsegede) , Tselemti and Southern Zone (Alamata, Korem, Ofla, Chercher etc) were part of Tigray. Amhara groups claim that Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) annexed these territories when TPLF was in power in Ethiopia. TPLF led Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) which ruled Ethiopia from 1991 till 2018.

The Pretoria Peace Deal signed between TPLF and Federal government in November 2022 lacks clarity about the status of disputed territories. It only says that border and identity disputes will be resolved through dialogue and in accordance with constitution.

Last month, Tigray fighters, aided by federal government, retook large parts of Southern Zone. Tigray military commander General Tadesse Werede said last month that the issue of southern zone & Tselemti will be solved by the end of the first week of June and the issue of western zone will be solved by the end of the first week of July this year.

Last night, hundreds of Tigray fighters crossed Tekeze river through the bridge which connects Endabaguna with Tselemti. It seems that Tigray fighters will make a move towards May Tsebri ( May Tsemre). Two days ago, Amhara residents of Adi Arkay claimed that more than 10 locals had been killed by Tigray fighters who crossed Tekeze and attacked Adi Arkay. Tigray dismissed this claim as false.

Movement of Tigray fighters from Shire towards Tekeze has also been seen. It remains to be seen if they will make a move towards Adi Ramets Welkait or not?

Amhara groups in western zone led by Mayor Eshete Damlew and Security Chief Colonel Demeke Zewdu have been warning TPLF against sending fighters across Tekeze river. Fano groups in Amhara region have also been vowing to fight back in case of attack on western zone by Tigray fighters.
