Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) fighters entered the Amhara region of Ethiopia on Friday. OLA is mainly based in the neighboring Oromia region.
Oromo Liberation Army, an armed group, has been fighting the Ethiopian security forces for decades in the Oromia region. They are operating in western, southern, eastern and central zones of the Oromia region.
Dozens of OLA members entered Artuma Farsi on Friday. Artuma Farsi is situated in the Oromia Special Zone of the Amhara region. In recent months, clashes erupted between Oromo armed farmers and Amhara Fano fighters in Artuma Farsi, Jile Dumuga and other Oromia special zone areas.
According to the residents of Artuma Farsi, dozens of armed OLA members entered the woreda and they hoisted OLA flag there. Pictures and videos have been in circulation since yesterday showing OLA members hoisting their flag.
While OLA fighters have entered the Amhara region, Amhara Fano fighters have also been trying to make inroads into the Oromia region. Since the start of armed conflict in the Amhara region between Amhara militias and government forces last year, Fano groups carried out several attacks in North Shewa, East Shewa and Horogudurru Wellega zones of the Oromia region.
Both OLA and Fano are fighting Ethiopian security forces in Oromia and Amhara regions respectively. The two are opposed to each other too. Entry of OLA in Amhara could pit OLA against Fano.
