The President of Somalia has announced reorganization of the Somali National Army (SNA). Four new specialized commands have been created.
Somalia is in the process of establishing a strong military. The country remained under sanctions for years. In December last year, arms embargo was lifted on Somalia. Since then, Somalia has been working to establish a professional and modern military.
The President ordered the creation of following four specialized commands in Somali National Army (SNA):
1. SNA Special Forces Command: Tasked with high-risk operations and counter-terrorism, led by Brigadier General Ahmed Abdullahi Sheikh.
2. SNA Training Command: Focused on developing the skills and expertise of SNA personnel, led by Colonel Ahmed Isse Ahmed.
3. SNA Reconnaissance & Intelligence Command: Responsible for gathering crucial intelligence and conducting reconnaissance missions, led by Lieutenant Colonel Ahmed Abdullahi Nur Beeryare.
4. SNA General Support Command: Providing essential logistical and support services to ensure operational success, led by Lieutenant Colonel Ibrahim Mohamed Mohamud.
In another development, Brigadier General Abdalla Abdalla, the former deputy intelligence chief has been appointed as head of the Special Branch and the deputy commander of the Somali Police Force. The Special Branch will be a new specialized unit within the police force to boost its operations.
Somalia has been fighting an insurgency waged by Al Shabaab for years. The armed group is in control of large parts of the country. Somali forces aided by African troops and western support have been trying to eliminate Al Shabaab. Despite several rounds of military operations, the armed group is still a force to be reckoned with in Somalia.
