Hundreds of Tigray IDPs returned to their homes on Saturday. The IDPs were displaced during the 2-year long war in northern Ethiopia which ended in November 2022.
The first batch of IDPs from Shire and surrounding area crossed Tekeze river, through Endabaguna, in buses on Saturday. Around 1500 reportedly reached Amba Madre from where they are being sent to their homes in Tslemeti. In recent days, Tigray military officers like General Tadesse Werede, General Migbe have been holding meetings in Shire and Endabaguna with the Ethiopian National Defense Force Officers.
The meetings were attended by leaders from the Amhara region and elders from Tselemti. After lengthy discussions, the stakeholders agreed on the return of Tigrayan IDPs to their homes in Tselemti.
Tigray military is monitoring the return of these Internally Displaced Persons. The temporary Amhara administration in Tselemti is likely to be dismantled.
Earlier, in April, Tigray militias took back Southern Tigray. Amhara provisional government there was dismantled and Amhara militias fled to Amhara region.
Unlike southern Tigray, the developments happening in Tselemti are smooth and peaceful.
Tens of thousands of IDPs have been at shelter camps in Tigray for the last 3 years. They took out large rallies earlier this week, asking the Tigray interim government and the Ethiopian federal government to ensure their return to homes before the start of winter.
Most of these IDPs are from those areas which are disputed between Tigray and Amhara regions or Tigray and Eritrea.
