Fano militia commanders Menberu Getaye & Seyoum Zengaw Dinku have been killed in an operation conducted by the Ethiopian military in the Amhara region.
The armed conflict between Fano militias and the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) has been ongoing for almost 2 years.
Menberu Getaye was killed in East Gojjam zone of the Amhara region. Menberu was a mid tier commander of Gojjam Fano. According to local sources, government militias and military detained local youths and imprisoned them in Sede, a small town near Motta city in East Gojjam zone of the Amhara region. On Friday, Fano militias launched an operation to free the imprisoned youths. Menberu Getaye was killed in the exchange of gunfire between military and Fano. Seyoum Zegaw, working as spokesperson of a Fano group, was also killed on Friday.
Two year long armed conflict has caused a humanitarian crisis in the region. Million of students have been left out of schools and business activities have been severely affected.
