Tigray Regional Forces Enter Sekota City in Amhara Region
Tigray regional forces on Friday entered Sekota city in the Amhara region. Since Tuesday, fighting has been ongoing between Tigray regional forces and the Ethiopian national defense force (ENDF) for the control of Sekota city.
Sekota is the most strategic city in the Wag Himora zone of the Amhara region. It serves as a base for ENDF’s military operations in Wag Himora, North Wollo and other zones. Since Wednesday, intercity transport from the city had been disrupted, Residents have been reporting a power breakdown for the last two days.
Tigray regional forces and Agew fighters advanced towards Sekota city from Korem and Abergele directions. Fano militias supported Tigray forces by blocking Lalibela-Sekota road. On Friday evening, Tigray fighters entered Sekota. Residents have seen ENDF units retreating from the city.
Sekota is the first major city in the Amhara region, which has come under Tigray military’s control. Not far away from Sekota is located Lalibela city. Fano militias, which are Tigray military’s allies, are pushing towards Lalibela. Flight operations at Lalibela airport have been suspended since Thursday.
