Food Prices Rose in Ethiopia in June 2026 to 15.1%
Food prices rose sharply in Ethiopia in June 2026, making it more difficult for many families to buy everyday items. According to the Ethiopian Statistics Service (ESS), food inflation rose to 15.1% in June 2026. The ESS said that the increase in the prices of basic food items like cereal, dairy products and vegetables was caused by rising costs of transport, supply problems and higher production expenses. In May 2026 food inflation was 15%.
The ESS also reported that the cost of many goods and services also increase side by side with the food prices. The annual inflation rate has increased from 13.4% to 13.9%. Food and non-alcoholic beverage prices increased by 15.1% year-on-year and non-food inflation is 12.2%. According to ESS, transportation costs rose by 14.3%, alcoholic beverages and tobacco prices by 14.5%, communication services by 8.9% , restaurant and hotel prices by 12.0%, and miscellaneous goods and service by 17.9%. The latest inflation data is expected to remain a major concern for policymakers.
