TPLF Rules out Election in Tigray

TPLF has ruled out election in Tigray without the restoration of its status. National Election is due to be held in Ethiopia on June 1, 2026.

Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) spokesperson, Michael Asgedom, in a press briefing on Wednesday, said that the federal government of Ethiopia is violating Pretoria Agreement by not restoring TPLF’s status as a political party. In current circumstances, election cannot be held in Tigray. The Ethiopian federal government and TPLF have been locked in a dispute for over a year over the restoration of TPLF’s status.

Michael Asgedom further said that Tigrayan IDPs won’t return to Humera Welkait Tsegede until the dissolution of Amhara provisional government, removal of Amhara settlers and withdrawal of Amhara militias from the disputed territory. He urged federal government to allow Tigray security forces to administer Western Tigray, disputed between Tigray and Amhara regions.

TPLF spokesperson denied secret or official contacts with Eritrea saying that Tsimdo is not a political or military alliance between Tigray and Eritrea. Tsimdo is only an engagement between Tigray and Eritrea border communities, he said.

TPLF and Ethiopian federal government fought a two year long deadly war which ended in November 2022 through Pretoria Deal. Though guns have been silenced in northern Ethiopia, yet tension again seem to be mounting between TPLF and federal government of Ethiopia.
