At least 7 people were killed and several injured in a suicide blast at a police academy in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia.
A suicide bomber blew himself up inside General Kahiye Police Academy on Thursday evening. The blast happened at a tea stall in the academy.
7 deaths have been confirmed so far by the Mogadishu police. Number of dead is expected to rise. The victims include Sugaal Abdulle Omar, a well known poet and playwright. In a related development, the Mogadishu police arrested Farah Warsame, a journalist working for the Associated Press (AP). He was covering the aftermath of the suicide blast when he was detained.
Al Shabaab, the extremist armed group fighting in Somalia for years, generally claims responsibility for such attacks. Though President Hassan Sheikh’s government of Somalia claims that it has inflicted heavy losses on the armed group in the ongoing military operation, Al Shabaab has been carrying out attacks in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, every few weeks.
