Somali MP, candidate for the AU Chairperson, Fawzia Yusuf Adam, in an explosive statement lashed out at her government on Thursday. Earlier this year, the government of Somalia launched MP Fawzia for next African Union Chairperson election. The election will be held in February 2025. Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre formed a committee to start lobbying for MP Fawzia’s campaign.
In televised statement on Thursday, MP Fawzia Yusuf said that she was being pressured to drop out of the race in favor of Djibouti candidate. Djibouti’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Ali Youssef is also lobbying for the AU Chairperson slot.
The Somali MP said that she met Hassan Sheikh President of Somalia, Hamza Abdi Barre the Prime Minister and the regional leaders of Somalia last month in Mogadishu. She alleged the leaders asked her to leave the race.
She said that she had decided to reject the pressure. She vowed to stay in the race, hoping to win the seat. There has been no immediate response from The Villa Somalia and Djibouti government.
“I initially wanted to stand for the post in 2016 but stepped down, allegedly after a request from President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud during his first term as president”, she accused.
“Why am I being discriminated against? Is it because I’m a woman or are there hidden reasons?”, MP Fauzia asked.
