TPLF Writes to UN & AU about Drone Strike

TPLF, on Friday, wrote a letter to the UN and AU chiefs about the drone attack which hit Tigray forces on Thursday night.

The letter addressed to the UN Secretary General and African Union Commission Chairperson accuses the Ethiopian Federal Government of disavowing Pretoria Deal which ended two year long deadly war between TPLF & the Ethiopian Federal Government in November 2022.

Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) stated in the letter that on November 6, 2025, the Ethiopian military conducted a drone strike on Tigray soldiers in Tigray Afar border area. The drone strike caused human and material losses. However TPLF did not elaborate upon the exact location of the drone strike and details of losses suffered by Tigray military.

Reportedly, on Thursday, Tigray forces made an incursion into the neighboring Afar region where the Ethiopian federal government has been establishing a proxy anti-TPLF armed group called Tigray Peace Force (TPF). Tigray military dismantled TPF’s camps in the Afar region. TPF fighters this month carried out attacks on Tigray military in southern Tigray during the visit of Tigray President Tadesse Werede.

According to sources, who prefer to be anonymous, on Thursday night, Tigray military captured TPF’s camps and weapons in Tonsa kebele Megale woreda of Afar region. On Thursday night, when Tigray soldiers were loading the weapons into vehicles to be taken to Tigray, the Ethiopian air force conducted a drone strike on the weapon shipments and Tigray soldiers. Unknown number of Tigray soldiers were killed and weapons were destroyed.

The drone strike by the Ethiopian air force was conducted in the Afar region of Ethiopia. However TPLF denies military entry into Afar. In its statement, TPLF said the strike was conducted in Tigray Afar border area.

It seems that Tigray military launched an operation into the neighboring Afar region to dismantle TPF’s camps. But the drone strike has escalated tensions between the two parties.
