Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) has warned a Chinese company (Poly-GCL) against exploration and extraction activities in the Somali region of Ethiopia. Somali region of Ethiopia has huge reserves of oil and gas.

ONLF fought Ethiopian security forces in Somali region of Ethiopia for years. In 2018, it laid down arms and signed a peace agreement with government. It has been accusing the Ethiopian government of not implementing the peace deal, threatening to explore “alternative ways to protect the rights of Ogaden people.”

“The Somali Regional State’s Energy and Mining Office has announced that its officials met with the Chinese company Poly-GCL in Jigjiga on March 13, 2025. This meeting is part of Abiy’s regime ongoing efforts to secretly advance oil extraction in Ogaden, while ignoring the unresolved political rights of the Somali people,” ONLF said in a statement issued yesterday.

ONLF warned the Chinese Poly-GCL by saying,” Poly-GCL and the Chinese government must remember the consequences of their past actions in Ogaden. If they attempt to extract oil or any other resources from Somali territory without the clear and legitimate consent of the Somali people, they will bear full responsibility for the repercussions.”

Earlier this month, ONLF announced to reconsider 2018 peace deal while withdrawing from negotiations with the Somali region government.
