Ethiopian Member of Parliament Gedu Andargachew, on Tuesday, released a statement calling for public uprising against the Ethiopian government of PM Abiy Ahmed.
Gedu is a member of House of People’s Representatives (HoPR). He is from the Amhara region of Ethiopia. Earlier this year he fled the country. He was seen in the US last month.
Gedu Andargachew was one of the staunch supporters of the Ethiopian PM when the latter took office in 2018. He supported the government’s position on war against Tigray too. Differences emerged between the MP and the Ethiopian government when security operation was launched in the Amhara region to disband and disarm Amhara militias. Gedu opposed the decision.
Last year, when the Ethiopian government imposed a state of emergency in the Amhara region, Gedu, delivering a speech at the HoPR, opposed the SoE and called for dialogue between government and Fano fighters. Later he fled the country.
In his statement released yesterday through Amhara YouTube channels, he used very strong language against the Prime Minister calling him a “barbarian” and “evil”. He called for uprising against the government claiming that the prime minister would destroy the country. Gedu criticized Amhara diaspora too for fueling internal divisions in Fano.
Gedu is one of the senior Amhara politicians. He served as the National Security Affairs Advisor to the prime minister of Ethiopia from 4 November 2020 to 9 June 2022. He served as president of the Amhara Region from 2013 to 2019 and served as deputy president of the region and head of the agriculture bureau. He also served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs from April 2019 to November 2020.
