CBE Ethiopia today warned customers about harmful applications that make discreet and unauthorized transactions on mobile phones. CBE Ethiopia, through a statement released today, warned customers against downloading and installing following three applications:

1. Trust App (Trust.Apk)

2. Google TV

3. Known Application

“The harmful application called Trust completely controls mobile phone and coducts unauthorized transactions without the permission of the owner of the mobile app or short code (*889*). Google TV, if installed on mobile phone, can transfer money using a mobile banking application without the victim’s recognition. “Known” application completely controls mobile phone. It has a lot of network usage, it creates a fake page that looks like Google Play Store to build trust and deceive victims. It transfers money without the victim’s recognition,” CBE said.

The bank asked its customers not to download any apps from unreliable sources (browsers like google chrome, telegram, whatsapp). Only official app stores, that carry out strict security checks such as Google Play, Amazon App Store or Samsung Galaxy Store, should be used for application downloading. The bank urged users to use two-factor authentication, Biometrics and PIN verification on mobile banking application.
