Asko woreda (district) situated in East Arsi zone of Oromia region has been gripped by fear of deadly Marburg virus for days. The virus was confirmed in Ethiopia by World Health Organization on November 14.
Mobile networks have been suspended in Asko woreda (district). Roads are almost closed with no transport available. Regional security forces earlier sealed off Asko. They are patrolling main roads, restricting entry or exit from the town. The Ethiopian Health Ministry has not shared any details about the situation in the district. However, locals say that several patients with Marburg virus like symptoms are admitted to health center in Asko.
Yesterday, the Ministry confirmed that one Marburg virus patient had been found in Hawassa city which is the regional capital of Sidama state.
