The Ministry of Education has selected 8 universities for Ethiopian summer teacher training programs 2018/2026.

In a letter dated November 6, 2018 (Ethiopian Calendar), the Ministry informed all universities that the summer teacher training program, which was introduced to universities since 2012 as part of a broader education system reform, would be discontinued. However, the Ministry stated that, under the new system, a summer teacher training program will be offered according to the newly developed training framework.

The Ministry announced that following eight training universities have been selected to deliver the summer training program in 2018.

1. Kotebe Teachers’ University

2. Bahir Dar University

3. Hawassa University

4. Mekelle University

5. Jimma University

6. Haramaya University

7. Gondar University

8. Arbaminch University

No other institutions can offer summer teacher training programs until further notice from the Ministry of Education. The letter, signed by Minister of Education Birhanu Nega, also states that teachers who started training before 2011 but have not yet completed it should be allowed to finish their training according to the previous decision.

The Ethiopian Summer Teachers Training Programs usually runs during the summer break (mid-July through early September) for 20 days or roughly 120+ hours of targeted instruction. Participants usually go through a pre-test, module instruction, and a strict exit exam. Generally a minimum passing score (often 70%) is required to receive a certificate of completion.
