Two Ethiopian Military Convoys Ambushed by Fano Fighters

Two Ethiopian military convoys were ambushed by Fano militia fighters in the Amhara region this week. The attacks happened in western Amhara and North Shewa zones.

Fano fighters have been carrying out ambush and assassination attacks on the Ethiopian security forces since 2023. At least 30 government soldiers were killed and wounded as Fano ambushed the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) troops advancing toward Qwara woreda. The ENDF convoy was on its way from Alefa woreda towards Qwara when it was ambushed. Qwara woreda is situated on Amhara Sudan border. Fano fighters have been moving to and from Sudan into Amhara through Qwara. Despite several operations, military has not been able to dislodge Fano fighters from Ethiopia Sudan border areas.

The second ambush attack was carried out by Amhara Fano People’s Organization (AFPO) in North Shewa zone of the Amhara region. Several government soldiers aboard two military vehicles were killed as Fano forces ambushed units of the 101st Airborne Commando Division traveling from Rema to Alem-Ketema, Merhabete Woreda, ( North Shewa Zone, Amhara Region, Ethiopia) on November 11. Two Fano groups called Amhara Fano National Force (AFNF) and Amhara Fano People’s Organization (AFPO) are operating in the North Shewa zone of Amhara region.
