New Regulations for Foreign & Private Schools in Ethiopia
Ethiopian government is considering introducing new regulations for foreign and private schools in Ethiopia. The Ethiopian Ministry of Education has finalized a draft to introduce several new requirements for private educational institutions.
According to the draft regulation, foreign schools in Ethiopia will have to prove that at least 30% of their budget is funded by the government of their home country. The schools will have to submit relevant documentation about it to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for verification. The new regulation has not been approved yet. It has been released for public feedback. Private schools will have to demonstrate sustainable sources of funding such as tuition fees, donations, or investment income and an independent management structure.
In an interesting move, the ministry of education has suggested, in the new regulations, that schools must consult parents or guardians at least three months before implementing any fee increase. Those educational Institutions, which will not make their fee structure public, will face a fine of 100,000 birr, the draft states. The draft proposes different penalties for schools which will violate the new regulations. The penalties include suspension of teaching activities for a limited period, and fines.
